THE GAME CHANGER - MARUTI SUZUKI CIAZ

THE GAME CHANGER - MARUTI SUZUKI CIAZ

Maruti has unveiled the production version of the Ciaz, and started the sale from mid-October. Bigger, sleeker and far better equipped than its predecessor, the SX4 it has replaced, the Maruti Ciaz is a really going to be a big step forward and puts Maruti back in the mid-size segment game which was ruled by the Honda City.
Even though Ciaz is a successor of the SX4, but it iz built on an all-new platform, the Ciaz has been conceived from a clean sheet of paper to take on the likes of the Honda City and Hyundai Verna. But it is really going to affect the Nissan Sunny, Ford Fiesta and Fiat Linea. Maruti is also expecting to take its image upmarket by making it a credible alternative to the more premium brands.

DESIGN

The Ciaz bears no similarity to any other model in Maruti’s range other than the Kizashi, but you can tell it’s a Suzuki thanks to a certain family look characterised by the small, three-slat rectangular grille and the conservative styling of the car. Like other Suzukis, the Ciaz doesn’t immediately grab your attention and though the styling is clean and not much complex, it’s unadventurous as well, especially when you view the car in side profile. But the Ciaz is having certain far resemblances with Honda City in certain angles.

The Ciaz has the largest footprint of all members in the segment, and sitting on 16-inch alloys (which is only available on the ZXI+ and ZDI+ variants). These features makes it looks like it belongs in a higher segment. There’s no doubt that the Ciaz is a handsome, the projector headlamps and the chrome finish on the front grill, door handles and the rear boot lid do give a premium touch.
You would expect that the large Ciaz would be rather heavy, but it’s quite the opposite. The chassis is constructed with high-tensile steel which, apart from giving rigidity to the body, lowering the weight. Having the scales at 1010 and 1105kg for the petrol and diesel versions respectively, the Ciaz is remarkably light for its size.

INTERIORS

Maruti sedans are typically associated with comparatively less premium cabins, but not the Ciaz, which turns this perception on on its head. The Ciaz is the most spacious mid-size car and the feeling of space is more enhanced by the large glass area and light interiors.
The back seat has an incredible amount of legroom and is wide enough for three adults, the flat floor being a help. The seat are well cushioned and the under thigh support is also good.
Again, in terms of design, the two tone dashboard is quite straightforward with simple lines and an uncluttered look. The centre console is dominated by a large 7-inch touchscreen which has an easy-to-use interface. However, this infotainment system along with navigation which is only available on the Z+ variants.
The instrument console houses a pair of small but easy-to-read dials which are again completely new. However, you can spot bits from other Suzukis, like the power window switches and door locks which are shared with Swifts and Dzires. Plastic quality is the best we’ve seen on any Suzuki – the fit and finish is very well executed but have to be improved. The wood-finish accents work quite well too and don’t look dull. A lovely detail is the chrome surrounds for some of the buttons, which gives a premium touch.
Where the Ciaz scores is on practicality with lots of storage space. You get 1-litre bottle holders for all four passengers and lots of pockets for odds and ends. While the glovebox is not that big, the 510-litre boot similar to Honda City boot certainly is – it’s large enough to swallow four big bags. However, the rear seats don’t flip forward to create more space.
Maruti has packed the Ciaz with lots of equipment, and expectedly, it’s the Z+ versions only that get goodies like 16-inch alloys and SmartPlay Infotainment. However, the lower trim levels are not badly off, except for the absence of safety features like twin airbags. Maruti should have offered driver and passenger airbags across the range as standard.

 TEST DRIVE

The Ciaz will feature two familiar engines – the 1.4-litre K-Series petrol and the 1.3-litre MultiJet diesel. Both the diesel and the petrol have been worked on specifically for the Ciaz. The petrol engine is dubbed the K14 and is the latest iteration of the K-series of engines. Lighter internals and revised bore and stroke numbers allow it to make 92.45PS at 6,000rpm and 130Nm of torque at 4,000rpm. While 1.4-litre may sound like a small engine for a mid-sized sedan, remember that this is a fairly light car. The petrol engine is smooth but a fair deal of engine noise creeps into the cabin. It needs to be revved and that’s not a bad thing but the ratios are spaced quite far apart for efficiency and this kills the fun.
Ride comfort is where the Ciaz truly scores, and Maruti engineers have arrived at a suspension set-up that works brilliantly on Indian roads. Tuned on the softer side, the Ciaz feels best at lower speeds, soaking up cratered roads with ease. Up the pace, and the Ciaz tends to pitch a wee bit on uneven surfaces, but again, bump absorption is superb and passengers are left unruffled. On smooth highways, the Ciaz feels well-planted and secure, allowing you to cruise effortlessly at some serious speeds.
The Ciaz feels best in a straight line and it’s not particularly eager to dive into corners. The steering, though nicely weighted, has a numbness about it and there’s a bit of a dead zone around the straight-ahead position.
The docile dynamics of the Ciaz make it a car that’s best for comfortable commuting and not for the enthusiast.

VERDICT

If you are looking for a comfortable car that’s well-equipped and easy to drive, the Ciaz fits the bill perfectly. It’s not a car for enthusiasts, but for someone who wants fuss-free motoring with the peace of mind that only Maruti can offer. Factor in a very competitive starting price of Rs 6.99 lakh for the petrol model and Rs 8.04 lakh for the diesel version (around Rs 26,000 and Rs 40,000 cheaper than the respective base Honda City’s) and it’s safe to say that the Honda City faces its most serious rival yet.

GO... GO... GO... DATSUN GO

GO... GO... GO... DATSUN GO

Datsun is not a new name. They were Japanese Car Manufactures since 1914. Datsun is a company having decades of experience not only in car manufacturing but also trucks and other heavy vehicles. Since Datsun was the truck manufacturers of the Imperial Japanese Army, the belief on Datsun can be considered as strong as bullet-proof.

In the later years, Datsun was considered as an exporting brand of Nissan. Since 1958 Datsun has shined in the American global market.
In the late 70s, while strengthening the native brand Nissan leads to decline of the name Datsun. Until 2013. Last year July 15, Datsun was reborn, as a brand of Nissan, providing all the features provided in Nissan with a bit lesser price.

India is one of the countries which is getting the advantage of Datsun after its rebirth after 3 decades. The Datsun Go is not less featured than Nissan Micra in any aspect except the price.
The Datsun Go shares the same V platform of the Nissan Micra. A sedan and a 7-seater is also coming from the Datsun in the same platform. Due to sharing of various components with Nissan, the Datsun Go is also manufacturing from the Nissan Renault plant in Chennai. Sales and services are also done through Nissan Showrooms. So, Datsun is practically a brand of Nissan.

Exterior : The Datsun Go is a good looking car. The D-cut grill mentioned by Nissan is the highlight of Go. The similarly priced Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 and Hyundai Eon doesn't have any similarity in sizes as compared to the Go. The Datsun Go is having dimensions competing higher segment cars such as Ford Figo etc. Datsun Go has a length of 3785mm and bootspace of 265 liters which make it a big car as compared to others in the segment.
Large headlamps not at all gives good visibility but also gives trendy looks. Even the follow me feature is included in this small package. While getting out of the car if we just press the headlight flasher, then the light will flash for 30 seconds. 13" wheels are used that make the Go look grossly under-tyred in those huge wheel arches. The diamond shaped grille, the angular,peeled-back headlamps and the character lines along the side of the car that runs into the tail section ensures that the designers have tried hard to keep it from looking too basic.

Interior : Even-though Datsun has done certain limitations to reduce the cost but doesn't done any compromise in the quality of material or features making Go much better than some higher Japanese opponents. Even-though the multi display in the speedometer gives a basic look it gives all the details includes rpm etc. Gear lever is placed in the central console. Resembling the Ambassador and old Fiat, bench seats are placed in Go.
Three persons can be seated in front but the company says its illegal. Park brakes are also installed in the dash. Both the windows in front are power windows but the controllers are present in the driver side only. Large amount of storage space is present and most of the spaces are kept opened. In place of stereo system, mobile docking is installed in dash and we can play music files from a smart phone. A mobile holder is also included.

Drive :  There is no compromise in the driving comfort. Good quality seats. Lots of space. Under the hood is a 1.2 litre three-cylinder petrol motor that's similar to the one in the Nissan Micra Active. It makes slightly less power than in the Nissan, but then again, the Datsun Go isn't that heavy. It's the car's kerb weight which makes the car such a peppy performer. Diesel variant is not present. Gearbox is designed to tune to Indian style drive. Go takes 15 seconds to reach from 0-100kmph. Go gives a good mileage of 20.7kmpl. Definitely we can say that, Datsun Go is a good car.

TATA ZEST - THE BEST CAR FROM TATA YET

TATA ZEST - THE BEST CAR FROM TATA YET

We never expected a Tata car like this when they introduced their new Horizonext Strategy announced by their previous Managing Director Karl Slym last year which made the cars updated in both appearance and
performance. The Tata Zest is not totally a new car from Tata, but a revised version of the Tata Indica Vista with a boot. But we shouldn't consider it as a face lift of Vista on the other hand the car is thoroughly re-engineered with every single component modified to match the international standards.

Tata Zest is going to be the pioneer one in the new era of Tata cars. Tata has all its expectations in this car model to get back into its home market. Tata has introduced 1.2 Liter turbocharged petrol engine in India for the first time. Fiat 90 ps diesel engine and automatic gear shift are also
new to this segment through zest. Tata Zest is going to be the only diesel car with automatic gear shift and 5 more patents with more features.

Test Drive Report

Tata has become a far apart in appearance. Tata Zest comes with a well engineered aerodynamic design which gives the feel of moving even when the car is at rest. On the basis of looks, the Tata Zest is the best in compact sedan segment which consist of Maruti Suzuki Dezire, Honda Amaze and Hyundai Xcent. The Tata Zest is loaded with exciting features like day time running lamps,
projector headlamps, LED tail lamps which are not present in the other cars in the compact sedan segment till now.
We feel that the car is having a bit higher ground clearance but it can solved by putting mudflaps. 15" alloys are installed in zest with 185-60, 15" tyres.
Tata has worked well to make the interior more attractive. Dashboard and trim are furnished with intelligent mixing of beige and black color. The aluminium finish on the sides of the stereo gives a premium look to the dash. The steering in the Tata Zest is one of the best steering not only in Tata but also in other cars in India. All these looks in dash and steering gives the driver a pleasant and comfort feeling.
The Harman developed infotainment system installed in the Zest has a lot of features, including voice commands, rear parking sensors etc. The climate control can also be controlled via the touch screen. The music system consists of 8 speakers, phone integration, vehicle management, auxiliary and memory card slot.
Audio quality is superb but lack of CD player is a negative. The automatic AC control and on-board computer is of European standards. The seats made of fabric are really soft. The generous front seats are a good blend of comfort and support. The rear bench is wide and space all-around is pretty good.
Driving comfort is best in the petrol version. The 1.2 liter turbocharged petrol engine developed in Europe is
for the first time in India through Zest. The specifications are very attractive. 90ps of power and 140Nm torque @ 1750rpm makes the driving more attractive. The sound insulation system in cabin is done extremely well.
The steering is electrically powered and light and works well in city drive. Gear knob is lined with chrome and the gear shifting is also good. The driving modes which we were not much familiar that are usually present in Mercedes are also present in Zest is a new feature. There are three modes namely eco, city and sports mode. City mode is the mode when the vehicle is started and other modes can be switched. Braking, Control and Comfort is excellent with presence of ABS with EBD and airbags.
Diesel Automatic Model is new, but with assist manual technology and fiat engine it is safe. Here we have three modes drive, neutral and reverse. Apart from this there is sport mode and can even drive on manual upon our choice. Diesel model gives more comfort especially in the city drive. Totally, Tata Zest is a good package. Tata hasn't announced the mileage and price. But if Zest is priced below 5 lakhs then it will surely going to challenge the others from Maruti Suzuki, Honda and Hyundai in the segment.

HONDA MOBILIO - THE 7 SEATER FROM HONDA

Honda Mobilio

HONDA MOBILIO-THE 7 SEATER FROM HONDA

Ever thought why the station wagon vehicle segment doesn't become much successful in India. We haven't heard about weekend days and camping then what is the use of station wagon. We are satisfied with a hatchback, if we want even more facilities, we will go for a sedan.

We will be going for even lengthy sedans for higher facilities, but not the extra storage space from a station wagon. What about having a set of seats in that storage space whenever we want and we can fold it when we not need it for extra storage space. Here comes the purpose multipurpose cars. We can either use it as an estate car or as a multipurpose car. This leads to the popularity of Multi-Utility Vehicle(MUV)s in India.

Here comes the Honda Mobilio after the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and the Datsun Go MUV is on its way to hit the streets. The fuel efficiency and other features are also taken a lead since made from car platform and mechanical features. Maintenance charges are also less. We can have all the features of a multi-purpose vehicle.

Mobilio Test Drive

Design: Mobilio has certain features taken from Honda Brio, but Mobilio is not as younger as Brio. The front view have certain resemblances of the Honda Brio and Honda Amaze, but is more heavy in looks in Brio as compared to looks of Brio. This is due to modifications done in the fenders and wheel arches, which will give a feeling of even more bigger car.

The character lines experimented successfully in the Honda Amaze is also present in the Mobilio. The different shape given to the rear window results in much more glass area. Wrap around headlamp is another appearance feature. Totally a cute looking car with lots of space. The length of Mobilio is little more lengthier than 4 meters.  This extra length is the biggest advantage in Mobilio as compared to that of others in the segment. Mobilio is having the most legroom in the third row seats. The 2650mm wheelbase increases the interior space. We can have adjustable space in all the three rows of seats as compared to others in the segment.

.The baggage space in the rear is little lesser is a negative. Reclining facility is also available in the second row of seats. We can fold the rear set of seats upon our choice in order to increase the luggage space. The interior designing is as same as Brio and Amaze but their are difference in color. In case of Mobilio, Beige color is major used in all spaces as compared to that of Brio which gives more good appearance for the interiors. The black finish in the dash is of higher quality as compared to that of Brio. The higher variants are coming with wooden finishes which gives more beauty to the dash. All the three rows of seat have separate AC vents which gives more luxury.

Drive: The H concept successfully experimented in Honda City is also implemented in Mobilio, that is, machine less human more. This concept results in giving more interior space in the Mobilio. Performance and other features are tuned according to users choice. 4-cylinder 1497 cc i-vtec petrol engine is furious with a power of 119 ps and torque of 145 Nm @ 4500rpm. Gear shifting is accurate and gives a mileage of 17.3 kmpl. 100ps power giving i-dtec diesel engine variant is also good. Diesel variant is also demanding since it gives almost 25kmpl of mileage. The power is 100ps and gives more torque than the petrol variant. It gives 200Nm torque @ 1750rpm. Mileage :24.2 kmpl. Honda has priced Mobilio well at a price of 6.49 lakhs only.
